COSTA RICA: Travel to the Pacific's "Rich Coast" and spend 6 nights in the natural beauty of Tamarindo, embracing the movement, nutrition, and mindfulness of the Wildfitness evolutionary philosophy, and find yourself inhabiting an entirely new lifestyle. Inspired by the natural + healthy daily movements of agrarian villagers, Wildfitness devised a program of playful outdoor challenges - imagine running wild trails, swinging through trees, hurdling over logs, practicing natural combat, and competing in fun group games - to reprogram the body according to its most basic instincts and fundamentals. This relearning helps to restore mobility in daily movement, reawaken neglected and forgotten muscles, and bring fluidity into a rigid, office-centric life. Based at Las Velas Blancas, an oceanfront bungalow surrounded by 70 acres of native flora and wildlife on the Pacific, the latest Wildfitness adventure leads you to misty waterfalls, rejuvenating hot springs, lush jungles, inviting ocean waves, and the vibrant culture of downtown Tamarindo. Led by enthusiastic Wild coaches, you'll climb, scramble, swim, surf, and explore your whole way through, with expert attention on your natural form and technique. When it's time to recover, find fuel in meals sourced from the local ecosystem, allowing the body to naturally select its energy sources, and learn breathing and mindfulness practices to diffuse stress and improve overall health. The Wildfitness retreat is an opportunity to rediscover your natural instincts and return to the evolutionary way of life. Cultivate an athletic, injury-resistant body. Learn the ingredients of optimal nutrition, and savor them in delicious feasts. Rediscover your connection with the present moment and the world around you. Then, use these wild tools to mold a new lifestyle back home, and begin living towards your natural potential.

  • “Run to see what’s around the corner and climb to discover what view awaits you at the top,” says coach Augusto. He reminds us that all animals move for purpose, pleasure or survival. Modern lifestyles have removed these factors from our movement, yet they are still hard-wired into our subconscious ... It’s true -- I see it as our tribe transforms. An oil specialist, a lawyer, a banker and a freelance writer…each of us finds energy reserves and skills we haven’t used since childhood.

Going wild isn’t nearly as difficult as I’d feared, and the results are steady and profound.

  • The fitness schedule incorporates all the aerobic and anaerobic training of any typical regime, but without any of the gym work or repetitive, formulaic structure. This was great for me as I’m not someone who can turn up to the gym each day without eventually getting bored and throwing in the towel altogether.

The importance of play was also a particularly apparent feature of the day.  Wildfitness is nothing like a typical bootcamp -- instead, you find yourself out of breath from laughter just as much as working out. Simply, fitness wasn’t meant to be something we had to strive for, it’s just something we were living every day.
